When club members first learned that Mecum Auctions was coming to Southern California, they became immediately excited. The club has many classic car collectors in the club. From classic Mercury Cougars, Chevrolet Camaros and Bel Airs, to Plymouth Cudas. The club reached out to Mecum and they graciously provided the club with tickets to the auction in Anaheim.

About 20 club members met up around the corner from the Anaheim Convention Center where the auction was to take place. Because rain was slated for the day, club members were free to drive whatever they liked to the event and many did. Enough, in fact, to create a small SUV club. :)

At the meeting location, the tickets provided by Mecum were passed out to club members, family and friends. After some chatting, the club rolled out for a short caravan to the Anaheim convention center.

After entering the main hall of the event, the club members were overwhelmed by the number of cars on display. 20 of us spread out in 20 different directions. The auction took up four halls of the convention center with the main hall being where the actual auctions were taking place and the other three halls served as warehouses for the cars being auctioned. For a car enthusiast, it was like letting a kid loose in a candy factory. So many great cars on display and being auctioned off.

So massive was the event that several times throughout the day I had to send out text messages just to locate fellow club members. At one point 6-7 of us were watching the auction and I became so enthralled in a particular auction that when it ended, I turned around only to find my myself standing alone not knowing the group headed off for another area. It was nearly a half hour later before I crossed paths with another club member. Some I never saw again after entering the main hall when we first arrived.

Many cars sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The highlight of the auction came when the 1932 Ford McMullen Roadster hit the auction block. It sold for a staggering $700,000.00. A 1930 Duesenberg sold for $370,000.00. And a 1936 Ford Jack Calori Coupe was auctioning at upwards of $300,000.00. All fine cars.

All throughout the day, many classic cars as well as muscle cars were being auctioned off. From classic 1956 Ford Thunderbirds to 1968 Chevrolet Camaros. A few Plymouth Road Runners crossed the auction block as well a Hemi Cuda and a variety of classic Mopars from a Plymouth Sport Fury to a Dodge Dart.

The club had a great time attending the event and many have now caught the auction bug. Club member Keith caught the auction bug early and pre-registered for bidding in the hopes of finding something both worthy and affordable. Needless to say, we all hope that Mecum returns to Southern California. With this event being one of the most successful for Mecum, I am pretty certain that they will be.

A special thank you goes out to Mecum Auctions for the tickets and allowing the club to participate in the auction. Kudos to all of those at Mecum, from staff to volunteers. The event was spectacular and very exciting.
