When the club learned that the sixth installment of “Fast and Furious” franchise was in final production and that it would be featuring so many Dodge vehicles, West Coast Challengers knew it had to do something fun to mark the release of the movie on Memorial Day weekend. Being fortunate enough to still have a few drive-in movie theaters in the area, we chose an evening and the club members quickly started to sign up for this special event.

With over 35 Dodge Challengers and a few Dodge Chargers joining us for the fun, we gathered nearby to hang out for a bit and visit with each other before taking off in a short caravan to the Van Buren Drive-In theatre in Riverside, CA.

The theater’s management suggested that we arrive early so that they could accommodate the large number of cars in our group. We parked along the street and waited patiently as they counted what seemed like one carload after another of club members and their families.

After we paid our admission fees, we all rolled in together and chose a spot towards the front of the three-story tall movie screen.

As club members began setting up their chairs and settling in to watch the movie sitting out under the stars, we were pleasantly surprised to see several other Mopar clubs all roll in together and come park with us. Before long, West Coast Challengers, SoCalLX, Mopar Syndicate, and SoCal’s Mopar Connected car clubs took over about 30% of the parking spaces for the movie. We quickly walked over and began to make new friends with all the Dodge enthusiasts in attendance. It was incredible to see all the beautiful and customized Mopars for what became an impromptu car show.

After checking out each others cars, meeting with old friends, and making new ones, the sun began to set and we knew we were just minutes away from the movie starting. Club members began heading back to their cars and folding chairs, with food and drinks in hand from the snack bar, we all relaxed a bit waiting for the movie to start.

Club members enjoyed the movie from it’s visually striking opening scene, a road race featuring the movie’s main character, Dominic Toretto, driving a Dodge Challenger (which drew an applause from club members), to it’s final action packed sequence. All of the platforms seemed to be represented like the newly designed Dodge Dart, a Dodge Charger with a custom paint scheme, a wide body Dodge Challenger with shaker hood and finally, a custom built Dodge Daytona lookalike. Vin Diesel was one lucky guy to get to drive them all.

With returning stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, Fast and Furious 6 was jam packed with plenty of jaw dropping action, high flying stunts, awesome cars, and some hot actors (both male and female). The movie is this summer’s break-out hit, both with club members and movie goers alike, to the tune of an opening weekend box office take of $117 million.

The club’s “Movie Under the Stars” evening event was a great success and there is sure to be another as Fast and Furious 7 is already in production and its villain was introduced, via a cameo appearance, at the end of Fast and Furious 6. We are all looking forward to it.
