Last year, club member Curt was selected to represent Mopar in Autoweek’s America Adventure. The adventure took Curt to several ghost towns and he suggested that we take the club to visit one and make a cruise out of it. Calico Ghost Town was the obvious choice due to its close proximity. So we began planning to do just that and Curt gave the cruise a nickname, “The Ghost Run.”

For this cruise, we selected two meeting spots. One in Tustin for the Orange and San Diego County club members and one in Ontario for the San Joaquin Valley, Los Angeles and Inland Empire club members. Once everyone was present and accounted for at the first meeting spot, that group headed off to meet those waiting for them in Ontario at the second meeting spot.

Setting out on a two-hour trek with a long line of Challengers is fun, but the club wanted to bring back the nostalgia of the 70’s and 80’s, when car clubs held road rallies rather than car shows like today. A road rally is about as much as you can have driving from one place to another.

At the Ontario meeting spot, everyone gathered around for last minute instructions. Once our engines were started and everyone was ready to roll out, each driver was handed a sealed envelope containing a random set of clues and things to be on the look-out for on the cruise. Once the club hit the highway, club members opened their envelopes and it was quickly game on.

We arranged for two way points along the way. One at the Cajon Summit and one at Barstow Station. While in Barstow, news of our arrival quickly spread through town and many local residents grabbed their cameras to come take pictures of our cars. One visitor had received a telephone call from a friend about our arrival and was told that he should come check us out. He immediately hopped into his B5 Blue SRT Challenger and paid us a visit.

Once we reached our destination at Calico Ghost Town, the club members turned in their rally sheets. For each correct clue found, the driver/navigator team was awarded one point. The final tally was very close with just one point separating first place. There was a four-way tie for second place. In the end, it was the driver/navigator team of Cindy and Teresa who brought home the coveted Ghost Run trophy and various Dodge Challenger gifts.

And that was just getting to Calico. Once the club arrived, we headed over a predetermined location for a photo shoot. Having done the MCAS Tustin Hangar Photo Shoot last September, lining up the cars took just minutes and was surprisingly seamless. While choreographing the cars, we became the main attraction at Calico with many people taking notice and snapping a few pictures of their own.

Once the cars were parked, 40+ people stepped back, in awe, and began shooting pictures from every angle, from professional cameras to iPhones. This particular location was chosen for the backdrop as well as the fact that we could also shoot from 100 feet above the cars, allowing for even more angles. The resulting photos speak for themselves.

Having photographed our cars, the club members headed into Calico Ghost Town where we checked in. Then it was off for lunch at the Calico House Restaurant. After a great lunch with friendly service, club members took off in various directions. Some went to visit the ghost town’s attractions, some took to photography, some visited the various shops and stores, and still some just found a town bench and relaxed in the sunshine with a cold bottle of sarsaparilla.

After spending many hours exploring Calico Ghost Town, the club members headed off for home with memories of the best club event so far and one which they will talk about for quite a while.

More photos from the event can be found in our club photo gallery.
